August Tragedy : Beach Is Not A Place For Mourning

Have you ever imagined when a trip for fun into sorrow? Recently two Mataram University students were victims of robbery and sexual violance at Nipah beach, one of whom was found lifeless and another one was found in critical condition (Liputan 6, 2025). This is a form of concern and students voice for real security issues. Therefore this incident should be warning to the local government to pay more attention to the security system of tourist attraction (Globalfmlombok, 2025).

The recent tragedy at Nipah Beach serves as a reminder of the importance of safety at tourist attractions. This incident occurred due to a lack of supervision and security patrols at tourist attractions, making it easy for perpetrators to commit crimes (Tiffany, 2022). In this case, strong evidence was found, as well as several witnesses who saw the incident (Humas Polri, 2025). This incident highlights the fact that safety at tourist attractions remains a serious issue that needs to be addressed by local governments. Therefore, it is important for local governments to pay more attention to the safety systems at tourist attractions to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

In addition, the lack of adequate infrastructure in the Nipah coastal area must be a contributing factor to crime (Fawaz, 2024). Adequate infrastructure such as surveillance cameras, sufficient street lighting, and security posts can help prevent crime and provide a sense of security for visitors and tourists. Therefore, the government needs to pay attention to infrastructure in tourist areas, not just in urban centers.

Efforts to create safety in tourist areas do not only depend on government attention but also require individual awareness through various forms of preparation before visiting the beach. Good preparation can help visitors avoid crime and provide a sense of security (Annisya, 2023). For example, checking the weather conditions before departure, not wearing excessive jewelry, and planning visit times, such as avoiding going too late at night or early in the morning when it is quiet. Thus, good and planned preparation can also be a way to avoid crime.

The tragic events at Nipah Beach serve as a devastating reminder that visitor safety at tourist destinations ought to be given careful consideration.  To stop repeat incidents, the government must become involved through surveillance systems, infrastructural upgrades, and security patrols.  However, personal awareness and thorough planning are just as crucial to maintaining safety.  Thus, cooperation between the community and local governments is essential to establishing a safe and welcoming environment for visitors.
