In the face of increasingly complex global demands, educational management research has emerged as a crucial foundation for improving the quality of schools and universities. Research is understood as a scientific process that is systematic, logical, and empirical. It does not merely produce theories but also provides practical contributions to strategies, policies, and educational innovations.
For many years, educational policies have often been shaped by intuition or long-standing traditions rather than solid data. As a result, decisions frequently fail to address the real needs of schools. Through research, educational problems can be mapped clearly, root causes identified, and solutions formulated based on evidence. What sets research apart from casual observation is its structured methodology and outcomes that can be justified academically.
Educational research carries four main functions. The theoretical function enriches and updates knowledge. The practical function addresses real challenges in schools, such as low teacher motivation or the effectiveness of learning programs. The policy function provides a foundation for evidence-based policy, ensuring decisions are fair and targeted. Finally, the academic function positions research as a requirement for students while also training them in critical thinking and scientific skills.
Beyond its functions, research has several strengths. It produces objective and measurable data, minimizes bias in decision-making, and provides scientific evidence to support innovation. Moreover, research results can be replicated, making findings more valid and applicable in different contexts. These advantages position research as a strategic necessity rather than a mere academic obligation.
While other forms of study—such as evaluation, literature reviews, case studies, and essays—may resemble research, they do not hold the same weight. These studies are useful, yet only research truly generates new knowledge. Therefore, fostering a culture of research among educators, students, and policymakers is essential to strengthen the quality and competitiveness of education in Indonesia.
