Improvements in the quality of education in Indonesia cannot be separated from the existence of high-quality research. Through research, various issues in school and university management can be accurately identified, analyzed using scientific approaches, and then given relevant solutions. The results of this research then become the basis for evidence-based policy making, improving the quality of learning, and giving birth to innovations in education management. However, research practices in the field still face challenges: some studies stop at descriptive reports without in-depth analysis, while education policies often rely solely on intuition. Therefore, it is important to present a comprehensive understanding of research as a strategic necessity, not just an academic requirement.
First, the meaning and essence of educational management research.
Research comes from the word “research,” which means “to search again.” It is a systematic, logical, and empirical activity to discover, test, and develop knowledge. In educational management, research not only builds theory but also improves practice, for example, in leadership, planning, and learning quality. Research differs from ordinary observation because it requires clear problems, scientific methods, and data validation. The main characteristics of research are that it is systematic, logical, and empirical, making it the standard for scientific research. Furthermore, research supports evidence-based policy, providing valid data, appropriate solutions, and academic legitimacy in educational decision-making.
Second, the functions of educational management research.
Research has four main functions: (1) theoretical, enriching knowledge and updating theories in line with the times; (2) practical, providing solutions to real problems in schools and institutions; (3) policy, forming the basis for strategic planning so that decisions are more objective; and (4) academic, as a requirement for theses and dissertations that train students in scientific traditions. These four functions show that research is a bridge between theory, practice, and policy.
Third, the advantages of educational management research.
Research is superior because it provides objective and measurable data, reduces bias, provides valid scientific evidence for policy and innovation, and produces solutions that can be tested through replication. With these advantages, research becomes an important instrument in the development of adaptive, consistent, and competitive education.
Fourth, other types of studies similar to research.
