Looking at a map of the 7th century world, a big question pops up: Why did Islam emerge in Mecca, a dusty town in the middle of a desert, and not in a more "suitable" place like a great city of the Roman or Persian Empires?
From a geopolitical perspective, the answer is surprising: Mecca was the perfect place precisely because the superpowers of the time saw it as completely unimportant.
1. The Global Picture: Safety in Being Ignored

Inside Arabia, Mecca was a tough place. Society was tribal and "barbaric" in the sense that there was no central rule. Strength and revenge were the only laws. Powerful tribes oppressed the weak, and moral values were low.
But this chaos was actually fertile ground. This society was strong and tough, but it had no unifying vision. The people were brave and excellent fighters, but they wasted their energy fighting each other in endless tribal wars. They were like a powerful engine with no steering wheel.
