In an effort to enhance the economic resilience of Indonesian migrant workers, a team of lecturers from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), in collaboration with the University of Malaya, conducted a community service program titled "Empowering Migrant Workers: UMY Lecturers Lead Financial Literacy Program in Malaysia." Held on June 14, 2025, at Pantai Permai, Kuala Lumpur, the event was attended by dozens of Indonesian migrant workers seeking practical guidance on financial management.

The program aimed to strengthen financial literacy among migrant workers by introducing essential concepts such as saving, debt management, and future financial planning. While many workers earn a stable income abroad, challenges in managing finances often lead to missed opportunities for long-term economic stability. Through this initiative, participants were equipped with tools and strategies to make informed and sustainable financial decisions.

The core team of UMY lecturers---Dr. Munjiati Munawaroh, Radyan Dananjoyo, Ph.D., and Dr. (Cand.) Rita Kusumawati---led the sessions, working alongside faculty members from the University of Malaya. This cross-border academic collaboration enriched the content and delivery of the program, combining theoretical knowledge with culturally relevant practices.

"This program is a form of real contribution from UMY to our migrant communities abroad," said Dr. Munjiati. "We want them to feel supported and equipped, not just emotionally, but also financially."
Radyan Dananjoyo, Ph.D., emphasized, "Financial literacy is a crucial life skill, especially for those navigating economic pressures far from home."

Real-life case studies and hands-on simulations ensured participants could relate the material directly to their experiences. The program also raised awareness about financial risks such as scams and poor investment decisions.

This initiative reflects UMY's strong commitment to global community service and the empowerment of vulnerable populations. The collaboration with the University of Malaya not only fostered academic exchange but also amplified the program's impact, highlighting how joint efforts between institutions can serve the wider Indonesian diaspora.
