Once upon a time, in a west of Lombok Island, there was born pretty little baby called Mandalika. She was daughter from a couple, King Tonjang Beru and his empress, Dewi Seranting.Â
Princess Mandalika has grew up as beautiful lady. She also had a good manner. People from Tonjang Beru really adore her. Everybody knew about Princess Mandalika's beauty and kindness, even prince from other palace. Such as prince from Johor, Lipur, Pane, Kuripan, Daha and Beru. They all falling in love with her attitude and charm.
They tried their luck, who's gonna married Princess Mandalika. Princess Mandalika confused and couldn't decide, so she asked all the princes to take part in archery competition in Seger Kuta Beach. One by one, all participants tried their best, but there was no winner because all the participants were great in archery. They all claimed to be the best. The fighting getting chaos, then Princess Mandalika had a great idea,
"Guys, listen to me. All of you are the best prince. But sorry, i can't accept your propose. I can't be your wife. I can't choose one of you because i don't want to hurt anyone. I want you all to have me, but not as your wife. I want to be someone that everybody can have," said Princess Mandalika.
Everybody were confused what she meant. Then they're shock when Princess Mandalika jumped into the sea and disappeared in the big waves. Lots of people were jumped into the sea to find Princess Mandalika but they found nothing.
Suddenly, a lot of colorful sea worms came out from the sea. They believed that those sea worms was Princess Mandalika. Sea worms were then called nyale. Until now, people keep catch nyale (the tradition called Bau Nyale), but nyale can only find once in a year.
