Parents are currently confused about getting their children into an educative institution which offers the best advantages for the future.  They may have a big concern in choosing types of school since each of them has different purposes. Recently, psychologists have announced that there are no benefits to single-gender school which may foster into stereotyping and sexism. It is such a fresh air for parents that they are ultimately given a clear thought in having their children educated. Eminently, mixed-gender schools bid a lot of good in building students’ intelligence and character.

Some experts who support single-gender school argue that girls and boys should be segregated in class since they have different learning styles. Girls tend to do collaborative and discussion-based learning while boys can dominate discussions and group-based team works. In this case, single-gender schools provide a chance to the teachers to have gender-specific learning techniques in their classes. However, we cannot generally assume that each student has the same learning style. There is also a high possibility of finding different learning styles even in a group of girls or boys. If ever, gender-specific learning techniques do not literally work. In the educational world, the quality of teaching, the conducive environment, and students’ performances are what really essentials. Mixed-gender schools clearly give a better offer of those three criteria. They have a less pressured environment with less gender specific intensity and a more balanced approach. Teachers should be able to understand students’ potential and maximize the competitive atmosphere whose boys and girls build to achieve the highest levels of both educational attainment and social development. The mixed-gender school will patently be able to develop students’ respect that they will be interacting with a lot of people including their opposite gender. They will learn how to respond toward their opposite gender’s behavior and it will eventually come to the better understanding among the students.

Opponents of multi-gender school claim that girls are showing better score in single-gender school. They conduct an observation and find out the significant advancement cumulative grade point averages (GPAs) for all female students who attended a certain all-girls school. Though it is a valid point, in any case, there are male students that are in fact found to be having better academic performances in mixed-gender school. Furthermore, there are no evidence that female students have a bad score when they are attending mixed-gender school. Instead, female and male students who collaborate in a mixed-gender school will get broader knowledge since they can share their thoughts in both male and female perspectives. The girls will be having more courage to increase their performances since they knew that there is an intense competitive environment with the boys. Same goes with the boys, they are going to keep their scores as stable as possible because they should preserve their academic achievements.

Reports from the supporters of single-gender school suggest that single-gender school can broaden the educational prospects for both girls and boys. They claim that single-gender schools break down gender stereotypes. For instance, girls are free of pressure to compete with boys in male-dominated subjects such as math and science. Either do boys, they will not hesitate in pursuing emotional subjects like music and art. Nevertheless, this kind of circumstances does not represent a real world for students in the future. In fact, students will live in a world that is far more diverse than ever before. They are going to interact with males and females, and going to have to understand that sometimes girls will outscore the boys or boys will outscore the girls. On the other hand, in having a job, they have to be able to face and solve any problems which may come from anyone. If we do not have gender-segregated workplaces, so why do we need to come to gender-segregated school? The mixed-gender school is an exact depiction of how the real world is running. It has a diverse environment that let the students be trained to face their upcoming profession by doing either individual or team works.

In conclusion, getting the children into single-gender school will definitely give less advantages rather than mixed-gender school. Mixed-gender school is an intact package of an implementation of education. It has an encouraging environment for the students to dig their potentials up. They will be practiced to have a high confidence in asking and giving arguments. Students will work collaboratively and competitively with others even the opposite gender. By having these, students are ultimately going to have a good social awareness that they are living in a diverse world and necessarily regard others. At the end of the day, schools will successfully meet their goals which are enhancing students’ intelligence and personality.
