Dubrovnik is mentioned in history around 850. There were two settlements. On one side was the settlement of Raguzion which was on the rocks across the coast. Across the road lived Slavs who named their settlement Dubrava after the forest. In time, they filled the ground, merged and built one settlement.

Dubrovnik is a medieval city that originated on the Adriatic coast, near the village of Cavtat. It is also known as Ragusa or Raguzion, the patron saint is Saint Blaise.

The city had its ups and downs, the biggest fall was in 1667 when there was a devastating earthquake. It had extremely good trade with other maritime countries. It was a city of states, but it kept the surrounding islands and coastal territories in its vicinity. Serbian Emperor Dušan died in 1333. sold Konavle to Dubrovnik, the people who lived there accepted the faith. The people there still celebrate the glory, even though they are of the Catholic faith. 

The head of state was the prince when he was elected by the Grand Council every month in order to prevent a dictatorship. It was ruled by many countries, Byzantium Empire, Turkey, the Venetian Republic, and the Napoleonic Empire in 1806. as well as the Austrian Empire. After the disintegration of the Habsburg Empire, it belonged to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. During the Second World War, it fell under Italian control. After the war, it became part of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, and since 1991 of the Republic of Croatia. Today it is known for its tourism.

History of Dubrovnik XV-XVI century

At the beginning of the XVI century. The Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa)  has good relations with the strongest countries in the Mediterranean, Turkey and Spain. Dubrovnik was often neutral while large naval forces were clashed. It also had good relations with the Venetian Republic. The Venetian Republic handed over the island of Lastovo to Dubrovnik in 1606. 

The essence of Dubrovnik's success was in the policy of neutrality and good trade. Trade intensified during the 15th century  and the 16th century. The Dubrovnik customs area in the areas of Turkey was created. The currency was the ducat. Even in some parts of Turkey, many respectable and business people lived in Dubrovnik. The Dubrovnik nobles were very active in the great trade by sea.

They imported products from the west to Turkey, but they also exported their goods to Turkey and western countries. There were Dubrovnik merchants in many Mediterranean cities. There was a layer of wealthier people who got rich by trade. Salt production was also important for Dubrovnik. Agriculture was still the main occupation of the majority.

Due to the great development of Dubrovnik, people were able to live better, they built rich houses filled with expensive paintings and furniture. Literature and art were also developed. Wealthier people were educated in western countries. Religious life was also developed. The people of Dubrovnik are Catholics, and the Cathedral of St. Blaise is located in Dubrovnik. Society in cultural life falls under the influence of the Catholic Church.
