Jelambar Nursing Home is a special place designed to protect and accommodate the elderly. Almost all the men and women who reside here are the result of recommendations from police and hospitals as most inhabitants were found on the street trying to earn money for a living. Warso, the head of Jelambar Nursing Home, explained this during a social visit by iSentia Jakarta team on June 14, 2014.

Jakarta’s civil administration is very concerned about the elderly and they do their best to take proper care of these citizens.  As a result, Jelambar Nursing Home was built in 1994 and inaugurated by Jakarta Governor Decree No. Prov. 57 in 2010. The nursing home was built on a land area of 2,141 m², located on Jl. South Jelambar II/10, Jelambar, in West Jakarta. At present, the nursing home accommodates 85 elderly people over the age of sixty. Staff consists of19 caretakers (11 permanent and 8 freelance).

As part of the social visit, PT iSentia Jakarta donated a washing machine, and snacks. iSentia do this because the company care about the community around them.

Assistant Customer Relations Manager of iSentia Jakarta, Deddy Hermawan, who spoke at the event, also arranged all the activities.  The elderly were invited to come to the front of the stage, to speak, sing, share poetry, and perform drama. They certainly appeared to enjoy the activity and the opportunity to be part of it.

An old woman named Diana sang the song "I am a Cow Shepherd" with passion, while the entire audience paused to enjoy her beautiful singing. Then, in middle of her song, the elderly grandma forgot the and lyrics stopped mid chorus – this caused exuberant cheers from the participants and laughter all around. The event also provided an opportunity for another old woman named Jumi to recite her own poetry. Grandma Jumi’s simple poem was very touching, her words reflecting on the elderly’s need for attention from younger generations.

Not everyone in Jelambar Nursing Home was able to join in the event hosted by iSentia. There are two groups of elderly people who live in the home; one group consists of people who are still able to do activities by themselves, and another group that cannot due to immobility. Unfortunately, only those who are still able to do activities by themselves were able to join in and follow the main part of the event. Following the participant show, however, the iSentia team visited each room to offer a snack gift to the elderly who were not able to gather in the activities. There was one elderly person who asked for our help to open his snack because one of his hands can no longer function properly. Without hesitation, several staff quickly assisted the man with a smile. Each of the participants said “thank you” to our volunteers and looked so excited to receive genuine concern from the iSentia group, requesting us to inform all people about the importance of giving attention to the elderly.

This was a great event by all standards and certainly will not be Sentia last visit to Jalambar Nursing Home.
