               PESUT MAHAKAM

The Mahakam River dolphin, also known as Orcaella brevirostris or Irrawaddy dolphin, is a rare freshwater dolphin found primarily in the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This species is believed to have originated from marine ancestors that adapted to freshwater habitats over thousands of years. The Mahakam population is isolated from other Irrawaddy dolphins, making it genetically unique and critically important for conservation.

The Mahakam dolphin has a rounded head without a beak, small eyes, and a flexible neck that allows it to turn its head in various directions. Its body is stocky, with a light gray color on the upper side and a paler underside. Adult dolphins can grow up to 2.3 meters long and weigh around 100 kilograms. They have a small, triangular dorsal fin located at the middle of their back, which helps them navigate in shallow waters.

This dolphin inhabits the middle and upper stretches of the Mahakam River, particularly in deep pools and areas with slow-moving currents. They can also be found near confluences, river bends, and tributaries. The Mahakam River's freshwater environment, with its diverse fish population, provides the dolphins with an essential feeding and breeding ground. However, their habitat is under threat from human activities such as mining, pollution, and boat traffic.

The Mahakam dolphin feeds mainly on freshwater fish, including catfish, carp, and small crustaceans. They use echolocation to find their prey, producing clicks and listening for echoes to detect objects in the water. These dolphins usually hunt in small groups, often working together to herd fish into shallower areas before capturing them. Their feeding behavior plays an important role in maintaining the balance of the river's aquatic ecosystem.

Mahakam dolphins are generally shy and avoid large boats, but they are sometimes seen surfacing gracefully in calm river waters. They communicate using clicks, whistles, and body movements. These dolphins are social animals, often seen in small pods of two to six individuals. They are also known for cooperative hunting and for being attentive mothers, caring for their calves for more than a year after birth.
