The Urgency of Research in Education Management as a Basis for Policy and Innovation

( By Wildan Putra Bungsu, S1 Islamic Education Management, class 5D , Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati )

Introduction

Education today faces increasingly complex challenges that cannot be addressed merely by intuition or conventional habits. Many misguided policies indicate a gap between theory and practice. Systematic, logical, and empirical research is needed to bridge this gap. Without research, policies risk becoming speculative and ineffective. The primary purpose of research is to provide valid data and accountable analysis, ensuring education policies are measurable, fair, and innovative in line with societal needs.

First, Research in education management is a systematic, logical, and empirical scientific activity aimed at finding and testing solutions to real educational problems. Unlike casual observation, research relies on theoretical frameworks, clear problem formulation, and structured methodologies. Without it, education policies are vulnerable to assumptions rather than evidence. Research aligns theory, practice, and policy, creating transparency, accountability, and measurable progress while ensuring relevance to community contexts.

Second, Research in education management serves four essential functions: theoretical, practical, policy-related, and academic. Theoretically, it enriches and updates concepts in education management. Practically, it helps institutions solve problems such as student learning motivation or teacher management. From a policy perspective, it ensures decisions are evidence-based and targeted. Academically, it builds a strong scientific culture among students and researchers. These functions highlight that research is not merely an administrative formality but a strategic necessity for advancing educational quality in Indonesia.

Third, The strength of research lies in its ability to provide objective data, minimize bias, and establish a solid basis for innovation. Research results are credible, replicable, and reliable, offering both academic legitimacy and practical benefits for policymakers. For example, school zoning policies will be fair only if grounded in research on population distribution and school capacity, not assumptions. With scientific evidence, decisions become transparent, accountable, and oriented toward real solutions. Research thus drives innovation that is both targeted and relevant to actual needs.

Fourth, In addition to research, other forms of study exist, such as evaluation studies, literature reviews, case studies, and scientific essays. While valuable, these do not generate new knowledge. Evaluation focuses on assessing program effectiveness, literature reviews compile existing theories, case studies highlight specific phenomena, and essays are reflective in nature. The distinction is clear: research is systematic, methodological, and produces scientific findings. Other studies remain complementary, but research remains central as the foundation of educational development.

In conclusion, Research in education management is crucial for evidence-based policies and innovations. It enriches theory, addresses challenges, ensures fairness, and upholds academic rigor. With objectivity and credibility, research provides legitimacy and practical solutions, making it a strategic necessity for improving education in Indonesia.
