In modern times, a handphone is not a luxury anymore, but a need that almost every student has. A phone gives many benefits, such as making it easy to find information (Perwanto et al., 2022) and helping learning through study applications (Warsita, 2018). But, if students use the phone too much, it can also give negative effects, especially to their motivation to study.
First, using the phone too often makes students more interested in digital fun than in school lessons (Magnago et al., 2024). Social media, online games, and funny videos are strong temptations. Students sometimes spend hours playing games or surfing online, so their study time becomes less. This makes their spirit to finish homework and their motivation to learn go down.
Second, too much phone use can cause addiction (Krmendi et al., 2016). Many students feel they cannot stay away from their phones, even in class or at home study time. This addiction makes their attention easy to move away. They focus more on notifications and messages than on lessons. This clearly reduces concentration and lowers their interest to study.
Third, playing with the phone too much also makes students delay their work (Simbolon & Daulay, 2022). They prefer watching videos, playing games, or checking social media instead of opening books. This habit of delay makes learning spirit lower and can influence their school grades.
To solve this problem, students need to control themselves in using phones. Phone use should be limited wisely, for example by making a special time for study without phone disturbance. Phones can also be used in a good way, like searching for study materials, reading e-books, or discussing lessons. Parents and teachers have an important role to guide and watch students so they stay focused.
In conclusion, using the phone too often can reduce students' spirit to learn if it is not managed well. Students need to balance phone use for fun and for learning. With self-control and support from parents and teachers, phones can be useful tools without reducing students' motivation to study.
