During the pandemic c0vid-19, all sector of life are like suspended animation. These sectors include economic, social, political, cultural and especially educational sector. The education sector has been greatly effected by this Pandemic, because school are one of the potential place where crowds occur. One of the policies taken by the government,  in this case the ministry of education and culture, carries out the process of teaching and learning activities online. This policy inevitably must be taken by the government to suppress the transmission of the corona virus-19 in the school environment (Zainin, 2022). Due to the government's decision, Saint Mary Medan Senior High School also changed the learning method from offline to online learning in the 2020/2021 school year. 

According to Campus Merdeka Indonesia, direct online learning makes us aware of the extraordinary potential of the internet that has not been fully utilized in various fields, including education. Without the limitation of time and place, educational activities can be carried out anytime and anywhere. However, behind every positive side of a thing, there must be a downside. Although formal educational activities can still be done online, because students have to study at home, character education during this pandemic feels a little neglected.

Students of Saint Mary Medan Senior High School also feel the positive and negative impacts in the online learning process. The positive impact is that students are more proficient in operating technology, more creative in doing tasks given by teachers with the help of internet, such as YouTube, Canva, Google and also have more time with their family. As for the negative impact, the SFD character education that has been instilled in students is slowly being forgotten. The student is dishonest and responsible for their self, that is doing assignment and exam using the help of application and google. In addition, student also do not pay attention to the rules set by the school or teacher. For example, during the zoom lessons, student are late joining, eating or drinking while zooming, and often happens is that student turn off the camera with reason insufficient networking. this cannot be blame directly by the teachers considering that not all parts of Indonesia have a good internet connection. 

It is undeniable that online learning cannot be separated from the internet network. Internet problems are a factor hindering the continuity of online learning, especially for student whose residences are in the village. Many student complain about the internet connection during the online learning. Moreover, students who live in remote areas in order to get a good network connection, they look for signal to climb into the roof tiles, look for alignment, go up the mountain (Ilmi, 2020).

This is also experienced by students of Saint Mary Medan Senior High School, because not all student live in the city, so online learning is not effective, many factors hinder the online learning process. This also results in student rarely or lazily zooming, so the student's monthly scores are also not very satisfactory.

The following are monthly chemistry test scores for class XI of Saint Mary Medan Senior High School 2021/2022.

From the date of 10 students obtained that the highest monthly score during the odd semester was in February, the chemistry's teacher of Saint Mary Medan Senior High School said that the increase in grades was because student began to be proficient in using technology as a learning medium. Meanwhile, the lowest score occurred in Apryl, the chemistry's teacher again stated that the decline in student scores occurred due to the saturation of students in the virtual teaching and learning process who were just starting at the monitor and were so monotonous.

Unlike offline learning where all activities are carried out directly, namely face to face and teachers can direct students and focus on learning. the most important thing is that the character of student can also be formed by teachers with teaching character values to SFD, which contains the values honestly, responsibility, mutual help, mutual respect, and others.

In the even semester of Saint Mary Medan Senior High School returned to study offline. From the date of 10 students obtained, the highest score was in December. The chemistry teachers of Saint Mary Medan Senior High School said that this increase in grades occurred because student were more serious in learning, more honest, more responsibility for themselves and there was fear if the ranking fell. offline learning does not have many obstacles, so learning is more effective and can take replace properly. students are more important studying because the result of the exam will determine whether the student goes up/passes. while the lowest test scores were in August, chemistry teachers again said the decline occurred due to the large number of activities , especially welcoming the 75th anniversary of the Republic Indonesia, where learning was not very conducive.

At the time of receiving the report card, it can be compared that the final score of the even semester is higher than the end of the odd semester score. This can be seen from the graph between odd and even semester grades. This implies that offline learning is more effective than online learning. This is accordance whit research conducted by Yudhi (2022), which based on the result of date analysis shows that offline learning is more effective than online learning in chemistry subjects, where based on the calculation of the MAUT method, it produces o.68 offline learning and 0.16 for online learning.
