Understanding this difference in gesture is crucial to creating inclusive workplace communication that values diversity in expression styles. The realization that good intentions from both parties can be misinterpreted due to different cultural norms helps in developing more effective and culturally sensitive communication strategies in a multicultural work environment.

  • Silence and pauses

Silence and pauses play an important role in nonverbal communication as a form of implied message. In the video clip, there is a short pause when the manager gives criticism. This is not simply the silence of sound, but part of the balance of interaction that contains psychological and cultural meaning. This pause is a process through which employees process information to determine an appropriate response or as a form of self-control to manage emotions. The pause here also indicates awkwardness, tension, or even respect toward the superior. In cross-cultural studies, especially in Asian cultures, silence after receiving feedback or criticism is often interpreted as a form of respect and consideration to avoid rash responses. Thus, in high-context cultures, communication is not always expressed explicitly but also implicitly through pauses and silences, which contain quite complex meanings.

  • Proxemics

Proxemics refers to how individuals utilize space in social interactions. In the video clip, the interaction between the manager and employee shows a relatively large physical distance between them even though they are sitting at the same table. This indicates a formal barrier and reinforcement of the organizational hierarchy. This distance reflects the employee's professionalism by showing respect through not overstepping the manager's personal space. Many corporate cultures and hierarchies, such as those in East and Southeast Asia, maintain a sense of distance as a symbol of respect for social status. This attitude is a form of self-control mechanism to minimize the possibility of emotional tension in situations that could potentially trigger conflict, such as when receiving criticism. It also clarifies the boundaries between superiors and subordinates, indicating the existence of a structured power relationship within the organization.

Conclusion

The video clearly illustrates that in intercultural interactions, nonverbal communication elements such as facial expressions, body posture, eye contact, gestures, proxemics, and pauses or silences are important. These elements are not merely supplementary to non-verbal communication but also carry their own meanings, which are influenced by the cultural norms embraced by each individual involved in the communication. From this, the ability to interpret non-verbal signals accurately is of great importance, especially in the context of cross-cultural professional relationships. By recognizing the importance of these differences in nonverbal communication, individuals and organizations can develop their cross-cultural communication skills. This is useful for reducing the risk of misinterpretation in communication. Understanding the non-verbal communication styles of people from different cultural backgrounds will support the creation of a conducive and harmonious work environment. Supervisors are expected to adapt their communication methods to the needs and communication styles of employees from various cultures, thereby supporting more effective collaboration and building respectful working relationships.
