Extreme Rain and Strong Winds Hits Solo Raya, Fallen Tree Causes Traffic Jam in Sukoharjo

The Solo Raya region was hit by extreme weather once again at the end of 2024, driven by the effects of the La Nia phenomenon and global climate change. According to BMKG predictions, this phenomenon has led to higher rainfall intensity across much of Indonesia. In Solo Raya, heavy rain accompanied by storms and strong winds struck Sukoharjo on Saturday, November 16, 2024, around 1:30 PM local time. This severe weather caused various damages and disruptions to residents' activities.

One notable incident occurred in Dusun Ngebrak Residential Area, Sukoharjo, where a house reportedly suffered significant leaks due to roof tiles being blown off by the strong winds. The residents were forced to take emergency measures to prevent further damage.

Additionally, the extreme weather disrupted traffic on the Solo-Sukoharjo main road. A large roadside tree fell, blocking access to the primary route and causing a long traffic jam. The tree's large branches obstructed the road, forcing vehicles to halt and wait for the removal process. A local resident at the scene, identified as M, reported, "A large branch fell onto the road, and we called people to cut it down. But it's still congested because the clearing process isn't done yet." According to M, the incident occurred shortly before the rain started to subside, and as of now, both authorities and residents are still working to reopen the road.

The extreme weather in Sukoharjo exemplifies the tangible impacts of unpredictable seasonal changes in late 2024. BMKG had previously warned that La Nia could bring high rainfall to Indonesia, particularly during the peak rainy season expected from November to December 2024 in the western region and January to February 2025 in the eastern region.
