This is a interesting topics to be discussed as among the people said that when speaking they don’t need to use grammatical rule accurately because as long as one you talk with can understand the meaning for what you said, it would be easy, and the point is the message itself is delivered instead you force yourself thinking which one to select the exact word, next conjunction, and proper tense and because you takes long time to doubt yourself finally you get afraid to make a mistake when you speak. But, the question is why?
Grammar subject was learned first time when you in middle or even elementary school going to high school and there are plenty branch of grammar material that you must be learned, started with make simple sentences, structure of the simple sentences such as noun, verb, object, etc, then going to tenses that involving the what time it is occurred. Based on writer experiences and perhaps a lot of English learner out of there, this tenses has spent much time to learn, memorize the pattern, and practice it on both speaking and writing skills.
But, why speaking skill do not be learn when even in high school, where as this is one of mandatory skills for hiring a job contemporary, because you will follow interview part with HRD who asking some questions including ability of English speaking skill. What the most important from speaking skill than grammar skills is when you are working, there are some occurrences where you should speak in English because you don’t deal with local native partner only but also interact with people abroad.
Back focusing to grammar, whether the grammar affects interaction process with other people depends on the chosen word that you pronounce. it’s clear that if one can understand what you are talking, although any grammatically wrong, but the messages itself is addressed and conveyed as long as ones your partner put the word in related context they referred. So, the context is crucial part when speaker try to be conform in English as effective as possible. Without the context, it only leave misunderstanding and confusion in both sides. Speakers usually can speak one topic in one performances to talk specific things which might be hobby, lifestyle, goals, etc. A good way for listeners to grasp what a speaker is talking about is to seek for keywords and make connections between them to get to a conclusion. Pay attention into words that speakers said, if talking about music, listeners have to be able to get the keywords which concerns to music elements such genres, artists, etc.
But it does not mean that grammar is useless and unworthy at all to be learn. You still need to learn because speakers can’t rely to the context only, but more pay attention at the grammar use when speaking in official forum or formal meeting with other employees or even supervisor and boss. Speakers was obligated to speaks as formal suits the condition where and when the events happen. Also, learning grammar definitely function crucially in writing particularly academic writing. For instance, writing essay is one of the requirements for being a student in a state college and attempt the best essay competition in college or anywhere. Writer have to focus on word and sentence structure, cohesion and coherence, and captivating topics at the same time, also choosing better diction should be considered for writer to write perfect essay. Writers can also use the slang words in their essay, but not overall type of essay allows it, because almost all slang words tend to be informal tone.
It is enough about writing. There is still a problem must to face by English learner when they talk with English learner as well. It is overreacting and observing to the grammar aspect and do not focus to the overall context involved, and that this causes the lacks of confidence when they are started to speaking English. When you start speaking, they will start to assess you based how good you in articulating and arranging words instead understanding as being mentioned earlier, the keywords and the context which intersect together to construct the main idea.
