A Management Information System (MIS) is an integrated combination of people, procedures, and information technology that functions to process data into useful information. The information produced must meet key characteristics: it must be accurate, relevant, timely, and capable of supporting the decision-making process. In the context of education, the role of MIS is crucial as it helps principals, teachers, and all administrators in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs. Its existence serves as the backbone for providing accountable data, simplifying administrative processes, and forming the foundation for strategic managerial decision-making.

An MIS is built by six main interconnected components. First, people (users), which include managers, users, and decision-makers. Second, hardware such as computers, networks, servers, and other supporting devices. Third, software, which includes data processing applications, database systems, and various supporting programs. Fourth, data, which acts as the main raw material in the form of recorded facts. Fifth, procedures, which are a set of standard rules and steps for managing data and information. The sixth step involves communication networks, which serve as a medium for the exchange and distribution of information.

The structure of an MIS in education generally follows a systematic flow consisting of three parts. Input is the data entry stage, covering student, teacher, financial, and infrastructure data. Next, the process is the stage of processing that data using specific procedures and software. The result of this processing is output, which is information in the form of various reports, be they academic, administrative, or financial. This information then becomes the basis for decision-making at all management levels, from strategic and tactical to operational.

SIMDIK (Educational Management Information System) is developed as an implementation of information technology specifically designed to meet the needs of educational institutions. Its approach is integrated and holistic, covering all school or madrasah operations from the registration process and academic activities to financial management andalumni data. This integrative approach emphasizes the interconnectedness between all components (such as students, teachers, facilities, and finances), thereby greatly facilitating the reporting process, increasing transparency, and ensuring accountability. Furthermore, by adhering to JARDIKNAS (National Education Network) standards, data within SIMDIK can be directly connected to the education department systems at both the regional and central levels, ensuring national data integration.
