The Tell-Tale Heart is more than just a scary story, it's a deep look into the human mind, especially when it's full of guilt and fear. The main character, who is also the narrator of the story, tries really hard to convince us that he's not crazy. He keeps saying things like, "
You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing." But as the story goes on, it becomes clear that he's not as in control as he wants us to think. His thoughts jump all over the place and the way he describes the murder and its planning feels way too calm for someone who claims to be sane. What makes it interesting is how he keeps insisting that what he did was smart when actually it's obvious that his emotions, especially guilt, are taking over him.
