Introduction

The rapid development of information technology in the last two decades has presented a real phenomenon that we can see in schools and madrasah. Nowadays, the admission of new students (PPDB) is done online, the recording of digital-based attendance, and the reporting of student data is directly connected to national systems such as Dapodik and EMIS. This phenomenon indicates that school management can no longer be separated from the use of technology. However, behind this progress, there are still schools that rely on manual systems. Student data is stored in paper files, reports are often late, and recording errors are still common.

From this condition, the assumption arises that the success of educational institutions is largely determined by their ability to manage student information quickly, accurately and in an integrated manner. There is a gap between the demands of digitalisation of education and the readiness of schools to adopt management information systems. Problems that often arise include limited infrastructure, lack of operators who understand technology, and weak awareness of the importance of data as a basis for decision-making. The purpose of this essay is to explain the important role of Student Management Information System (SIMKES), its scope and benefits, as well as a relevant development model for schools to improve the quality of education services in the digital era.

Concept of SIMKES

Student Management Information System (SIMKES) is an integration of human resources and information technology to manage student data from admission to graduation. SIMKES is not just an administrative tool, but a strategic instrument to develop students' potential academically, socially and emotionally. The principle is to provide accurate, relevant, and timely information to support planning, organising, and controlling student activities. Thus, SIMKES comes as a solution to make schools more orderly, efficient, and accountable in carrying out their functions.

Scope and Tasks of SIMKES

The scope of SIMKES covers the entire student journey at school. The process starts from student planning, then continues with the admission of new students through registration, selection, and orientation. Once accepted, students are placed in classes according to academic policies. Furthermore, SIMKES organises curricular and extracurricular coaching, records attendance and achievement data, and determines grade promotion, specialisation, and graduation. In the final stage, SIMKES also records alumni data to keep in touch with the school. Operationally, the student affairs department is responsible for fostering the student council, managing the UKS, assisting with discipline, proposing scholarships, and compiling periodic reports. All of this shows that SIMKES plays an important role in guarding students from entry to becoming alumni.
