Violence and racial profiling by police in Two Distance Strangers
Police violence and facial profiling become widespread issues in the United States. Police would disproportionate use of violence and racial profiling to the certain groups especially Black Americans. This act has a racial bias to certain races which are more likely committed crime. For example ,the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 sparked anger and protest across the country. This led examine violence and racial profiling by police and how reduce the bias.
Two Distant Strangers, nominee for the 2021 Oscar for short film (Live Action), uses the Time loop formula of Groundhog Day to create a social commentary film where the great plot is crucial to delivered its message. After all, in America, those stories, stories of systemic racism and police brutality against black men and women, seem to keep happening, don't they?
A terrible newscast that repeats itself. And so the Oscar-nominated Two Distant Strangers feels not only like a parable for this special moment, but also the climax of everything that has happened before and forces us as viewers to take into account our own biases and prejudices, ourselves. us simply with a clean and secure closure.
Police violence
Police have long history of violence with suspects especially Black American. Police violence is a leading cause of death for young men in the United States. Over the life course, about 1 in every 1,000 black men can expect to be killed by police (Edwards, F., Lee, H., & Esposito, M. 2019). IN the film, Carter keeps getting killed even escaped every situations. So the Black Americans are destined to be killed by police. The police could ask the polite and calm manners instead pointing a gun at the suspect. The police suddenly attack Carter and Carter is trying to fight back which only resulted in his dead.
Racial Profiling
"Racial Profiling" refers to the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. The police suspects Charter smoke weed, just because he is black. This assumption is dangerous which can make error judgement
