Research in educational management plays a crucial role as the foundation for both the development of knowledge and the practice of managing educational institutions. Research is not merely ordinary observation but a scientific activity that is systematic, logical, and empirical. Through measured methods and theoretical frameworks, research helps discover and develop new knowledge that can serve as a guide in formulating policies and strategies in educational management. Without research, decisions are often based on intuition, which risks producing speculative policies.

The functions of research in educational management can be categorized into four aspects. First, the theoretical function contributes to building and enriching knowledge. Second, the practical function provides solutions to real problems faced by schools and educational institutions. Third, the policy function serves as the basis for evidence-based policy, ensuring that decisions are more rational and accountable. Fourth, the academic function acts as a requirement for students in writing theses or dissertations, while at the same time training them to think critically, systematically, and scientifically.

In addition to its functions, research also has several advantages. One of the most important is its ability to produce objective and measurable data that can reduce bias in decision-making. Research also provides scientific evidence to support educational innovation and produces findings that can be replicated to strengthen the validity of knowledge. Therefore, research becomes an essential instrument to ensure that educational systems operate in an adaptive, accountable, and sustainable manner.

However, not all studies can be considered research. There are other forms such as program evaluation, literature reviews, non-research case studies, and scientific essays, which are commonly used in educational management. Although beneficial as complementary studies, they do not generate new knowledge; instead, they enrich perspectives and support decision-making. This distinction highlights that research must be regarded as the main pillar in building educational knowledge and policy, while other studies serve only as supporting elements.
