A case of violence that occurred in Pidie Jaya, Aceh, has again captured the public's attention. In a video circulating, a junior high school student was seen being mistreated by his friend in the school environment, even witnessed by other students. This incident not only shows violence between students, but also illustrates a deeper reality: the nation's identity crisis and the weak implementation of civic values in the lives of the younger generation.
Indonesia is known as a nation that upholds the values of humanity, mutual cooperation and tolerance, an identity that is historically inherited and enshrined in Pancasila. However, this incident shows that these values have not been firmly embedded in the real behavior of students at school. Civic education taught formally in the classroom does not seem to be able to shape students' moral awareness and social responsibility. They may be familiar with the concept of tolerance in theory, but have not made it a part of their daily life practice.
When violence occurs in schools that are supposed to be the safest place for children to grow, learn, and build character, not only the future of the individual is at stake, but also the future of the nation. Schools are one of the leading institutions in building national defense in the non-military aspect, namely through the formation of the mentality, attitude, and personality of citizens who are resilient and have character. If Indonesian children from an early age are accustomed to solving problems with violence, then slowly the national values that should be a solid foundation of national defense will be eroded.
National identity will not be strong only by memorizing symbols and mottos, but must be lived in action. Events such as this one in Aceh show that there is still a gap between the noble values of the nation that are taught and the real behavior that occurs on the ground. This is a deep reflection that national character building needs a more humanist, relevant and consistent approach.
Therefore, it is important for all elements of the nation-educators, parents, government and society-not just to regret this incident, but to make it a turning point to improve the character education system and strengthen national identity. Only then can we produce a young generation that is not only academically intelligent, but also emotionally mature and morally resilient in maintaining the integrity and sovereignty of the nation.
