Quality Time with my Brother

For many reasons, I and my brother did not have many times to hang out together. That day, we accidentally decided to eat together in the place that we had not visited before. We directly went around Solo city, Central Java, Indonesia. We have not decided yet the place where to eat. We passed an exotic area of Solo named Laweyan. I say it is exotic because when you go around Laweyan, you will feel that you are going into the past. So many old buildings with the typical combination between Javanese and Dutch style: spacious, tall wall, and look tough. It becomes more special because since old time until today, Laweyan is the center of batik (Indonesian traditional clothing) home industry. People call it as Kampung Batik Laweyan.

Aha, we saw the new restaurant. The name was not unfamiliar for me, Kopitiam Oey, the name of restaurant that was already famous in Jakarta, capital city of Indonesia. So it had to be the branch of Jakarta restaurant. Without thinking further, we stopped and were ready to "taste" new experience in Kopitiam Oey Solo.

Kopitiam Oey Solo is located in Perintis Kemerdekaan Street number 35 Purwosari Solo, a very strategic place in the center of Solo. The owner is Bondan Winanrno, Indonesian senior journalist who is famous as food expert as well. Kopitiam comes from Hokkien accent (one of local Chinese languages) to say kafe tien which has the meaning of coffee stall.  While the name Oey comes from the owner's family name. On the list of the menus you can read the slogan of the restaurant in Indonesian old style of writing "Koffie Mantep Harganya Djoedjoer" or in Indonesian new style of writing "Kopi Mantap Harganya Jujur". It has the meaning of "Tasteful Coffee with Fair Price". Yups, from the old style of writing, people already start to feel the atmosphere of Indonesia in the past.

In front part, I was welcomed by attractive dominant red color of old advertisement poster. It is fancy! :) When you look around, there are many other old advertisements posters from various products including cigarette.  It becomes more surprising when you see hanging bird cage. It is so typical with old Javanese house which commonly the house owner put the bird cage inside the house. But of course in this restaurant you will not find alive bird on the cage :)
