Student Information Management System (SIMKES) as an Instrument for Improving Education Quality Sarah Zakiyah Nim 2249100010 Postgraduate Student Master of Islamic Education Management Class III-A UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung
The phenomenon developing in the world of education today shows that improving the quality of educational institutions is strongly influenced by the effectiveness of student management. The Student Information Management System (SIMKES) emerges as a strategic solution to face the challenges of managing complex and dynamic student data. However, the reality in the field shows that many schools have not yet optimally utilized information systems. The assumption is that if student management is carried out systematically through planning, data management, supervision, and technology-based evaluation, the educational process will run more efficiently, transparently, and accountably. Nevertheless, there remains a gap in the form of weak digital infrastructure, a lack of competent human resources, and limited integration among system components. The purpose of this writing is to provide an understanding of the concepts, scope, and development strategies of SIMKES as an effort to improve the quality of educational management in Indonesia.
First, the essence of the Student Information Management System is the integration between humans and technology to provide accurate information that supports educational decision-making. According to Gordon B. Davis, an MIS is an integrated system of people and machines designed to support the operational and managerial functions of an organization. In the context of education, student management means organizing all student activities from admission to becoming alumni. This system helps educational institutions manage students effectively so that their potential can develop optimally, in accordance with the mandate of the National Education System Act (Law No. 20 of 2003).
Second, activities in student management include planning for new student admissions (PSB), class distribution, coaching and development, as well as recording, reporting, and graduation. Through SIMKES, all student data can be managed digitally and in an integrated manner. For instance, the PSB process is conducted via a web-based system that allows automatic data input into the school's database. This process increases efficiency, reduces administrative errors, and simplifies data verification for prospective students.
Third, the utilization of information technology in SIMKES can enhance work efficiency, save time, and accelerate communication among school stakeholders. Teachers and staff are no longer burdened with administrative tasks that can be handled by digital systems. Moreover, the expected outcomes of implementing SIMKES include improved school credibility, easier reporting to education authorities, and real-time access to students' academic progress for parents.
Fourth, the development model of SIMKES is directed toward an integrated system (Integrated School Information System/I-SIS) that connects student, teacher, financial, attendance, grading, and communication data through an SMS Gateway or online portal. This system allows principals and parents to monitor student activities and progress directly while supporting the transparency and accountability of educational institutions.
The development of the Student Information Management System is an essential step toward realizing modern educational governance. With effective SIMKES implementation, schools can improve service quality, accelerate decision-making processes, and strengthen relationships among schools, students, and the community. Therefore, implementing SIMKES should be a strategic priority in developing national educational management.
This paper is summarized from the teaching module of the Educational Management Information System course, Part 5: Student Information Management System (SIMKES), instructed by Prof. D. A. Rusdiana, M.M.
