The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on all areas of life, including the education sector. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the education system where the learning process is usually done in the classroom with face-to-face now turned into distance learning. Distance learning requires teachers or other educators to be able to master information and communication technology, because technology and information can be used to support the online learning process. Learning materials will be delivered using on-line learning, e-learning or web-based learning systems. Elliott Masie, Cisco and Cornellia (2000) explained, "E-learning is delivery of content via all electronic media, including the internet, intranet, extranets, satellite broadcast, audio/ video tape, interactive tv, and CD-ROM". E-learning is not only used as a place to deliver material, but e-learning can help a learning system that regulates the roles of teachers, students, learning management, evaluation systems and learning monitoring. In this case, e-learning requires a system to manage integrated online learning, namely the Learning Management System (LMS). Learning Management System (LMS) is a global term for computer systems developed specifically to manage courses or lectures or online learning, distribute subject matter and enable collaboration between students and teachers or lecturers. Here I share my experience in using a Learning Management System (LMS), as well as what advantages and challenges are provided in an LMS.
Learning Management Systems (LMS) have certainly become very familiar in our lives during this pandemic. The use of a Learning Management System (LMS) helps the learning process from elementary school to university level. Especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, as a student I feel quite helped by the Learning Management System (LMS) because it makes it easier for students to access lecture content or materials anywhere and anytime. This is one of the advantages of using a Learning Management System (LMS). Another advantage of using a Learning Management System (LMS) is that it facilitates lecture activities such as quizzes, assignments, uploading materials. The LMS learning method that uses several information technologies in the form of images, sounds, animations, videos, and texts makes learning materials easier to understand and not boring. Learning Management System (LMS) certainly provides convenience between lecturers and students in interacting through discussion forums available on the LMS. In addition, the cost of using LMS is cheaper than the face-to-face learning process. In this case, it is not only students who benefit but it can also make it easier for lecturers to find and organize lecture materials for students and make it easier for lecturers to collect and analyze data on student lecture results in a shorter time. Behind the advantages offered by this Learning Management System (LMS), of course there are several challenges. Learning Management System (LMS) in delivering the material is supported by the internet, so the internet becomes one of the challenges. In this case, a stable and good internet connection is needed to access the LMS, if the connection is not stable or good then the learning process through the LMS will be hampered. The next challenge is the interaction between lecturers and students, although LMS makes it easy for lecturers and students to interact, but the interactions that occur are very limited only through group discussions, less able to implement real-time interactions between lecturers and students. For example, when a student asks a question but the lecturer is not online, the lecturer will answer the question a few hours later or even the next day when the lecturer is online. In addition to the internet that supports the running of the LMS, supporting tools such as smartphones, laptops, and computers are also one of the challenges of using LMS.
Learning through LMS often makes it difficult for students to understand the material given. In contrast to face-to-face learning, if there is something that students cannot understand about the learning material, students can directly ask questions about the related material. While online learning through LMS students have to wait for the answer from the lecturer or teacher if they are online again. All subjects seem to be effective using Learning Management System (LMS) learning, if you study them with focus and independently look for other sources related to the material. However, when asked what subjects are most effective in a Learning Management System (LMS) are subjects related to understanding or reasoning or it can be said that subjects do not require much practice in the learning process. Meanwhile, what subjects are less effective when using a Learning Management System (LMS) are subjects that in the learning process use a lot of practice. Apart from that, the Learning Management System (LMS) is expected to be able to assist in the online learning process, it is hoped that the material provided can be understood well by students, and it is also hoped that there will be training or guidance for teachers and other teaching staff who are still having difficulties or constrained in running the learning management system (LMS) process.
