Reflection of Servant Leadership on Library: How to Manage Information and Library Services in The Global Competition Challenges?

Introduction

As an international accredited college, it is better to have management information organization that educational, innovative, evolutive and integrative manners. The role of information management units in higher educational program must be evaluated thoroughly and comprehensive. Generally, an organization has a leader as a central control of organization structure. Library is an organization that engaged in services of information, documentation, archives as well as all of library materials. The libraries have a deep relation with the Librarian as the person in charge to manage information.

To face up the global competition challenges, libraries must be maintain brand-image, function and purpose by increasing quality of information and library services both in terms of managerial and conceptual manners. Basically, librarians are functional and technical professions. However, are they able to answer the global competition challenges to bring the library that they leads for competing internationally? As we know that there are several models of leadership styles, one of them is the servant leadership style. Furthermore, we will reflect on how a librarian applied the servant leadership style in library leadership as an effort to bring the library answers the global competition of leadership challenges in millennial era.

Servant Leadership

Thinking about servant leadership carried out by Greenleaf's, a leadership revolution pioneers in 1970. Another sections, Spears (2010) said that the main purpose of a servant leadership is to serve and fulfill what is someone needed, which optimally should be the main motivation of leadership. Servant leadership will be developed in each individual and help individuals to success in their lives and work. The concept of servant leadership emphasizes the importance of respecting human beings as God's creatures, therefore the leaders assume that empowering and developing followers is a mandate that must be fulfilled. Profit and other organizational goals are the second priority of a servant leadership. However, along with such behavior, servant leadership will actually increase the ability to compete in a sustainable manner. Spears (2010) extended Greenleaf's work by proposing 10 main characteristics of Servant Leadership as follows listening; empathy; healing; awareness; persuasion; conceptualization; foresight; stewardship; commitment to the growth of people; and building community.

Reflection of Servant Leadership Style in Library

The characteristics of servant leadership can be reflected in various examples of lead actions to bring the library organizations to be brave organizations in global competition challenges.

Listening

Library leaders are able to listen what is conveyed others thoroughly and profoundly. Professionally, librarians must develop the ability to recognize what the needs of others. They must be clearly understand what others said and then able to analyze in order to give the best solutions For example, library staff encountered problems about book circulation systems with user. In this case, the library leader must be analyze problems from various angles. They must analyze from problems background, staff until user perspectives. Furthermore, leader must be deliberate rationally and transparently to make problem mapping. Given that servant leadership is oriented to the interests of others. So, in the end the leader must be give "win: win solution" for all. Solutions must still refer on main rules and policies that apply in the library that they lead.

Empathy

Library leaders must have a high awareness that everyone needs to be accepted and recognized in diversity. It means that comprehensive which start from the Tribal, Race and Inter-group (SARA in Indonesia), feelings and attitude, capability and personality of each other. For example, the library has staff with differs ages, competencies, educational backgrounds, personalities and personal problems. They must be understand thoroughly. Library leaders cannot charge all tasks that related to the information technology to staff who have medium information technology capabilities. If conditions require imposing the task, they must provide an alternative by assistance from other teams or give an information technology training before
