we are born and grow in various country with different cultures and languages. It is certain that the environment greatly influences the culture and language that was being introduced first. The language that we first acquire is called mother language. Mother language is so influence to the people tongue or we can called it dialect. But, as long as the development of world technology, people can meet and talk with other people from different country. This phenomenon make us decided to have one global language, and that is English.

  • English is a Global Language

English is a global language that very often used by the people around the world. The majority of people consider English to be a global language since it is spoken and understood by the most of the population in almost every part of the world. What is a global language? There is no officially meaning of this but, Mastin (2011) described that it refers to a language that is taught and spoken by native and second language speakers all over the world.

There are approximately 360 million native English speakers and almost twice as many speaking it as a second language, making English one of the topmost spoken languages in the world (Klappenbach, 2019).  English is widely used in a variety of fields, including education, medical, commerce, technology, tourism, and social activity. This phenomenon make the school which have a different mother language created an education subject of various levels.

  • The Behavioral  Learning

English has now become a second language that must be learned from an early age so that a good dialect is formed. Behaviorist theory in English teaching is needed in this approaches. Behaviorism is a learning theory that studies observable and measurable behavioral changes, which result from stimulus-response associations made by the learner. The teacher in every school should start introducing English from an ealy age, so that children can get used to a language that is not their mother language. Some international schools have implemented this method, but in some public schools / the government schools, English still being ruled out.

The behavioral learning theory is important for understanding how to encourage and assist student in the classroom. As a result of a response to the student’s stimulus, information is transferred from teachers to students.  In behavioral learning, students are a passive participant, teachers provide them with information as part of a stimulus-response system just like how they learn the mother language. Teachers will observes how the students react and respond to various stimuli by behaviorism. This should be done repetitively, to make the student get used to English language and implemented it even that they are outside the class/school.

  • Reward and Punishment

Basically, the system is based on rewards and punishments. Teacher who provide positive reinforcement, or rewards, whenever students do a specific behavior, according to behaviorists, will train them to perform the behavior on their own. Punishments are treated in the same way. People, according to behaviorists, respond in reaction to physical stimuli created either inwardly or externally. This theory stems from the work of Pavlov who studied animal behavior, and was able to condition a dog to associate the ringing of a bell with food. Pavlovian conditioning is known as classical conditioning.

The behaviorist theory believes that “infants learn oral language from other human role models through a process involving imitation, rewards, and practice. When a child attempts oral language or imitates the sounds or speech patterns they are usually praised and given affection for their efforts. Thus, praise and affection becomes the rewards.

Through a trial-and-error process, in which acceptable utterances are reinforced by comprehension and approval, and unacceptable utterances are inhibited by the lack of reward. In other words, children develop a natural affinity to learn the language of their social surroundings whose importance both over language learning and teaching must never be underestimated.
