Many of us must be familiar with the word "Advertising". In today's era, many large companies advertise their products. The product itself can be advertised through posters, banners, billboards. The advertisement itself, according to Kriyantono (2008), is a non personal form of communication that sells persuasive messages from clear sponsors in order to influence people to buy products by paying fees for the media used. To advertise a product, you can use several types of media, one of which is outside the home media or out of the home media. Outdoor media are advertisements that are outside the room such as billboards, banners.

Nowadays we have found a lot of advertisements around us. Whether its at a  red light junction, on the wall, at the electric pole, even in the trees. Now everyone can easily create their own product advertisement. But did you know that advertising is bound by rules and ethics? These rules are contained in the Indonesian Pariwara Ethics or known as EPI. Even though we have easily created and placed advertisement, we don't necessarily ignore the ethics and rules set by EPI. I will give an example of an out of home ad that violates EPI ethics :

This advertisement violates the EPI bullets in article 4.5.1 regarding the placement of ad locations that have obtained permission from the authorities. Placing the ad on the tree by means of nails will damage the tree and will create an ugly view of the surroundings.

The advertisement from the billboard above displays the word "Cheapest" where the sentence violates the EPI about language article 1.2.2 which reads "Ads may not use superlative words such as "Number One", "Most", "Top", or words beginning with "Ter", and/or which has the same meaning, unless accompanied by evidence that can be justified". The billboard advertisement claims that it is the cheapest without any reliable evidence.

The online gambling site advertisement that I got on one of the free movie streaming websites certainly violates EPI regarding gambling and betting article 2.25 which reads "All forms of gambling and betting may not be advertised, either clearly or cryptically".

The advertisement posted at the intersection of the parangtritis road violates the EPI regarding outdoor media article 4.5.5 which reads " Outside the house advertisement must not interfere with the view of the passer". These advertisement are placed on electric poles which can interfere with the concentration of passing traffic.

After we know the examples of advertisements that violate the Indonesian Advertising Ethics, I hope that in the future we can all pau more attention to the ethics and rules of outdoor advertising. Greetings literacy.
