Islamic education faces global challenges that demand reform and innovation to remain relevant and competitive. Educational reform aims to reshape the system to align with the social and economic needs of society. However, obstacles such as social, economic disparities, and segregation in education present significant issues that must be addressed. This paper will discuss the foundational concepts of global educational reform, its implementation in Indonesia, Islamic education reform, and reform models through the Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) concept.
First, the Basic Concepts of Global Educational Reform.
Educational reform aims to reshape the system to align with the needs of society. It seeks to harmonize education with social, economic, and political values, producing graduates equipped for contemporary demands. Racial and socioeconomic inequalities remain significant challenges, hindering equitable educational access for all.
Second, National Educational Reform in Indonesia.
Educational reform is a long and complex process, often extending beyond political and economic reforms. It aims to enhance educational effectiveness by identifying barriers and formulating research-based strategies. The reform during the United Indonesia Cabinet era introduced changes through Law No. 20 of 2003, along with a 20% increase in the education budget.
Third, Islamic Education Reform in Indonesia.
Educational reform demands systemic paradigm shifts, where changes in one aspect impact others. Islamic education reform has evolved through policies such as the Joint Decree of Three Ministers in 1975 to Law No. 20 of 2003. Empowering schools and decentralization-based management are strategic steps in Islamic education.
Fourth, Islamic Education Reform Models through Merdeka Belajar.
The Merdeka Belajar concept aims to create a joyful, innovative, and independent educational system. Flexible zoning policies in student admissions (PPDB) aim to provide more equitable access for students. The implementation of Islamic education in the Merdeka Belajar framework shapes moderate Muslim personalities through 21st-century learning.
Educational reform seeks to reshape the system to align with the social and economic needs of society. In Indonesia, educational reform has taken longer than political and economic reforms. The Merdeka Belajar concept offers a solution for creating a joyful, innovative, and independent educational environment for students.
