In today’s digital era, the presence of smartphones in the hands of university students is nearly constant. Whether it's in the cafeteria, hallway, or library, the sight of students scrolling through their phones has become part of daily life. But what about inside the classroom? The debate surrounding mobile phone use during lectures has become increasingly relevant, especially as educators and students navigate the blurred line between digital assistance and digital distraction.

Smartphones undeniably offer a world of knowledge at one’s fingertips. With a quick search, students can access scholarly articles, dictionaries, academic videos, and collaborative platforms like Google Docs all without leaving their seats. However, while the potential for educational enrichment is immense, the risk of distraction is equally great.

Research supports this dichotomy. A 2015 study by Kuznekoff, Munz, & Titsworth, published in the journal Communication Education, discovered that students who used their phones for non-academic purposes during class such as texting, checking social media, or browsing unrelated content performed significantly worse on tests than students who did not. The researchers concluded that even momentary distractions caused by phone use could hinder learning and retention. In essence, multitasking in the classroom can create a false sense of productivity while actually decreasing academic performance.

In contrast, Kukulska-Hulme & Traxler (2005), in their book Mobile Learning: A Handbook for Educators and Trainers, propose a more optimistic perspective. They argue that mobile phones, when used properly, can enhance learning experiences by supporting personalized, flexible, and collaborative learning environments. For example, phones can be used to quickly fact-check information, participate in digital polls, or collaborate on real-time digital assignments. From this point of view, it’s not the device that is inherently good or bad—but rather how it is used.

To better understand how this plays out in real-world settings, we spoke with students and lecturers from the state Polytechnic Of Madiun

Two of the state Polytechnic Of Madiun students, Panji and Teo, both agree that smartphones serve as valuable tools in their academic routines.

“Using a phone in class helps us look up difficult vocabulary, check background information about the topic, or even participate in class discussions,” said Panji. “But it’s important to know when and how to use it properly.”

Teo added, “We always try not to use our phones when the lecturer is speaking or when our classmates are presenting. It’s just about having classroom manners.”

This balanced approach reflects a growing awareness among students that technology use requires ethical boundaries. It's not simply about having access to a smartphone but also having the discipline and awareness to use it respectfully.
